KidsCampLive was born out of a pandemic.
The vision of KidsCampLive is to connect . . .
children and families around the world as we work together to weather the storm of a global pandemic. We understand that Kids Need Kids--everywhere, everyday--even during a pandemic. Together, we unite children in a learning environment that empowers them to participate in a teaching experiment. More than academics, they will learn and use soft skills for communicating, expressing, sharing ideas, and showing compassion. Together, we will survive this pandemic and emerge with more connectedness, awareness, and a new kind of self-sufficiency that comes from helping others and understanding that we, in our homes, local environs, and global communities, are far more alike than different.

The philosophies that keep us focused as we strive to thrive . . .
are similar to Finland's educational system--considered one of the best in the world. KidsCampLive (KCL) follows the lead of other countries that strive to emulate Finland's holistic educational model. It is cooperative vs. competitive--the basics are the priority--a more relaxed environment means less stress--values time off and play time--less emphasis on testing--less homework.
In the US, we are paying attention to the "unintentional learning" philosophies that begin with the development of intentional lesson planning that allows for flexibility--we are ready to throw out the plan and redirect to make way for a teachable moment(s). We develop intentional "Flexi-lesson Plans" with flexibility in mind to redirect whenever there is an opportunity for a teachable moment(s).
It's unconventional and at its best when there is diversity. Mixed ages. Camp sessions bring children of different ages together (initially, we introduced KCL to kids ages 6-10). Cooperation v. competition. Instead of competing, our students nurture--using their maturity, knowlegable, critical thinking capacity to mentor others. Unbounded. And there are no geographic boundaries--only opportunities to share our world view and learn about what and how others see.
We believe creative- and critical-thinking are paramount--and learning soft skills is perhaps more important than core academics. Unlike hard skills that can be learned through study, soft skills are experiential (akin to emotions or insights)--small groups of 6-8 in mixed ages of 6-10 work together to problem solve, pay attention to time management, resolve conflicts, network, listen, present, and engage in sharing-caring (actively practicing empathy).
Our goal is to explore the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics--STEM with the Arts) concepts and models by taking them through a process that fosters inquiry and problem-solving using expression, performance, and other creative outlets.
The virtual environment, though challenging, offers limitless possibilities and a fresh perspective of how we can learn, expand our horizons, and grow as a people. At KidsCampLive, we are helping to grow the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and, equally important, in the arts and humanities.

Joan Lucci, founder and executive director
Joan is the visionary behind KidsCampLive, which launched during the first week of April 2020. The idea was sparked over the weekend when California's governor, Gavin Newsom, issued what became known as the Stay-at-home order issued on March 19, 2020. At the time, she was living in a rural and remote area of San Diego county and working on a family ranch as an extra hand and nanny to the two children age 8 and 10. Her immediate concern was with regard to the children's already hampered opportunities to socialize with other children.
After some concerns that she may have been infected with COVID-19, Joan moved off the ranch to quarantine or quaran-team with family members in San Diego proper. During this time, she baked bread* and began thinking about KidsCampLive. |

Joan's professional experience has been diverse and most vibrant whenever her entrepreneurial spirit and creativity were encouraged to shine through. Most of her career has revolved around service orientation: Software engineer, Marketing manager, Sales executive, Interior Designer, Web and graphic designer, Blogger, Teacher and course developer for adults and children. The range of industries has also been diverse: Technology, Education, Government, Natural foods, and the Non-profit sector.
*What do you do when there's only dried beans and industrial-size sacks of flour on the grocer shelves? You buy the beans, flour, and yeast--staples for great meals. Says Joan Lucci, founder of KidsCampLive, "We skipped the picked-over loaves of bread at the grocery store and decided to bake our own -- even mastering homemade bagels and hamburger-hotdog buns! There may be a silver lining to quarantine as we take on the challenge with a positive mindset to think outside the box -- learn or sharpen skills, bring out board games and puzzles, and use this time to reflect within and reach out as we have an opportunity to build closer relationships (with our quaran-team, close to us, and reach out by streaming video to those who are "dear to us"). KidsCampLive has the potential to bring this spirit to children as we connect them in new and exciting ways!"

Brianna Wetherbe, director and science educator

Brianna is a certified Permaculture Designer and youth educator with a degree in Sustainability. As one of our first camp counselors at KidsCampLive, she developed what we refer to as flexible lesson plans or "Flexi-lesson Plans"--intentional planning that makes way for unintentional learning. She still leads some of our sessions and is our go-to resource for planning any of our themes related to the S (for science) in our STEM/STEAM programs.
As a member of our volunteer board of directors, Brianna has helped create, from the inception of KidsCampLive, the vision, direction, and core philosophies that launched our community. She serves on other non-profit boards and is active as an environmental advocate and educator for the San Diego Audubon Society, California Native Plant Society, and is a guide at the San Diego Natural History Museum. |
Openings for board members.
KidsCampLive is in the process of getting its nonprofit status. We will be required to establish a working board of directors to help with Securing funding (raising money, planning fundraisers, and more), Recruiting volunteers and program participants, and pitching in as volunteers while we are recruiting actual volunteers.
Are you interested in joining our future board of directors? Or can you refer someone who you think would be a perfect addition to our team? Can we count on you for moral support and are you available to put time into the work that needs to be done?
If you are passionate about finding creative solutions to connect children in a fun, educational, creative, meaningful, and safe way, you could be just the person we need to join our board.
